Hotel Complex in Chania

The Landscape as a Starting Point

The Hotel Complex in Chania draws its identity from two defining characteristics of the site: uninterrupted views towards the Cretan Sea and the natural slope of the terrain. The development follows the existing topography, allowing the individual volumes to integrate naturally into the landscape while maximizing views across the complex.

A central objective of the design was to make the horizon a constant presence throughout the guest experience rather than a feature reserved for selected spaces. Outdoor areas, openings and circulation routes form part of a unified spatial strategy that allows the landscape and the sea to accompany visitors from the shared amenities to the accommodation areas.

The Arrival Experience

The arrival experience introduces visitors to the overall composition of the development. From this point, they understand how the complex is organized around the view, the presence of water and the site’s natural topography.

The lobby and reception areas serve as the main point of orientation within the development, gradually revealing the relationship between shared spaces, circulation routes and guest accommodations. A sequence of framed views unfolds along the way, continuously directing attention towards the sea.

A Shared Center

At the heart of the composition lies the social core of the resort. Around the main swimming pool, pool bar and dining facilities, the project’s most social spaces come together to form a central gathering place and social hub.

Located at the center of the development, this shared core acts as a point of reference for the entire complex. It also marks the beginning of the transition towards the more private accommodation areas. Water remains a recurring element throughout the experience, visually connecting the architecture with the horizon of the Cretan Sea.

Designing the Transition

The transition from the collective to the private unfolds as a gradual experience of discovery. As visitors move away from the central social core, spaces become quieter and more secluded, reinforcing a sense of privacy and retreat.

Pathways, planting and intermediate outdoor spaces shape this progression. Together, they create a gradual transition from shared experiences to the more personal realm of hospitality.

The Hospitality Experience

The accommodation areas ensure privacy while maintaining uninterrupted views towards the Cretan Sea. Their arrangement creates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation while preserving a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Private swimming pools strengthen the relationship between water and landscape, offering a hospitality experience that combines privacy with a constant connection to the view. Private outdoor spaces allow guests to move seamlessly between the vibrancy of the shared amenities and the tranquility of a more personal setting.

Within the main accommodation building, the cellular organization of the guest units breaks down the scale of the overall volume. At the same time, it establishes a distinctive architectural identity and brings rhythm and cohesion to the composition.

Stone, Earth and Light of Crete

The material palette draws inspiration from the natural environment and architectural heritage of Crete. Local stone, sand-toned rendered surfaces and timber elements used for shading and privacy create an architectural language closely connected to its setting.

Curved surfaces and softened corners reduce the perceived scale of the volumes. Throughout the day, changing daylight conditions reveal different qualities of the materials. Rather than contrasting with its surroundings, the architecture seeks to become a natural extension of the landscape.

Architecture with Longevity

The project draws on the enduring qualities of place to maintain its value and relevance over time. It integrates naturally with the landscape and makes use of locally inspired materials. Together with bioclimatic design principles, these decisions create a hospitality environment that remains authentic, functional and timeless.

Through this approach, the development offers an experience rooted in the enduring relationship between architecture, landscape and people rather than temporary trends.
