Villa, Palaio Psychiko II
Three-storey residence in Palaio Psychiko
The renovation of the three-storey residence in Palaio Psychiko was an ambitious architectural endeavor. The design meets the dynamic needs of a modern five-member family. Located in a prestigious suburb, the project required careful attention to both functionality and aesthetics. The design ensures that the space can accommodate not only the daily life of the residents but also gatherings and activities for guests. The result is a residence that balances elegance and practicality through spatial organization and meticulous design details.
Ground floor: A blend of formal and informal living spaces
The ground floor of the residence serves as the main living space, composed of two distinct yet interconnected units. A formal unit and an informal unit. The formal area consists of a dining room, an ideal setting for entertaining guests in a more structured environment. Adjacent to it, the informal area includes the family living room and kitchen. This space offers a relaxed atmosphere for everyday interactions and activities.
What makes this floor particularly versatile is the use of sliding doors that function as partitions. These doors allow the residents to either open up the space for larger gatherings or close it off to create more intimate and private areas. This flexible layout is a hallmark of the design, responding to the family’s need for adaptable living arrangements. The use of clean lines, contemporary materials, and subtle transitions between spaces ensures a cohesive flow, making the ground floor both functional and aesthetically refined.
The design’s focus on connectivity extends to the exterior of the villa. Large floor-to-ceiling windows invite natural light into the house, further enhancing the sense of openness. These windows illuminate the space and provide visual continuity between the interior and the outdoor areas. They ensure that the villa maintains a strong connection to its natural surroundings. The outdoor areas of the residence are designed as extensions of the indoor living spaces. The gardens and patio areas are accessible from the ground floor through expansive sliding glass doors. These encourage a fluid transition between the house and its natural environment.
The basement of the residence has been transformed into a multifunctional space. It may offer a variety of uses that go beyond typical utility. Here, the architects have taken advantage of the expansive layout to create areas for entertainment and storage. This underground level can be adapted as a home theater, recreation room, or even a guest suite.
First floor: communal and private living
On the first floor, the architectural focus shifts towards a balance between communal and private living. At the heart of the first floor is a communal living room. This room acts as a central hub from which the four bedrooms radiate, providing easy access.
Each of the four bedrooms has been designed with the family’s comfort and privacy in mind. Spacious layouts, ample storage, and large windows create a bright and airy atmosphere, while maintaining a sense of privacy. The positioning of the bedrooms around the communal living room allows both family connection and the necessary privacy.
Undoubtedly, the most striking architectural feature of the interior is the central staircase. Situated prominently within the entrance hall, the staircase is more than a mere functional element. It serves as the architectural centerpiece of the residence. Conceived as a double wooden spiral, the staircase embodies a sense of elegance and dynamism, drawing attention to its sculptural form.
The curved design of the staircase contrasts beautifully with the clean, linear geometry of the surrounding spaces. This contrast adds visual interest and complexity to the otherwise minimalist interior.
A refined synthesis of form and function
The renovation of the villa in Palaio Psychiko is a prime example of modern architectural design that harmonizes functionality and aesthetic beauty. Through the careful consideration of spatial organization, material selection, and the incorporation of architectural elements such as the central staircase, the residence successfully meets the needs of a contemporary family while retaining a timeless elegance.
The seamless flow between formal and informal spaces, the flexible use of sliding partitions, and the integration of natural light all contribute to a living environment that is as dynamic as it is welcoming. In this project, the architects have not only addressed the practical requirements of modern living but have also created a residence that stands as a testament to thoughtful and inspired design.
