Loft , Glyfada
The project focuses on the complete transformation of an existing penthouse apartment, located on the top floor of a building from the 1980s. The renovation design of the loft in Glyfada maximizes the sea views and creates functional living spaces. The architectural approach focuses on enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. The goal was clear: to optimize the panoramic sea view and modernize the living experience.
The main goal of the renovation design was to highlight and enhance the breathtaking view of the sea. The original layout of the apartment did not take full advantage of its location. By increasing the size of the existing window openings, to more expansive views, natural light floods the interior. Moreover this change provides an uninterrupted connection between the indoor space and the surrounding environment.
Maximizing views and modernizing living spaces
A key aspect of the renovation involved reworking the layout of the spaces of the loft. The primary living areas are orientated towards the sea, giving the residents the best possible vantage point from nearly every part of the apartment. The result is a well-thought-out, open-plan layout that maximizes the apartment’s relationship with its surroundings. The central core of everyday life is concentrated within a single open-plan living room, dining room, and kitchen, which ensures that residents can enjoy the sea view from all the main living spaces.
By streamlining these areas into a single, cohesive space, the design fosters a sense of openness and continuity. The kitchen, dining area, and living room flow seamlessly into one another, offering a modern, airy ambiance that is both practical for daily life and perfect for hosting guests.
Strategic use of materials to define spaces
The open-plan layout enhances flow and light. On the other hand, different functional units within the apartment maintain their own distinct character. This is achieved through the use of unique materials and architectural features that delineate spaces without interrupting the overall design cohesion.
For instance, the custom-made bookcase, crafted from sheet metal, serves as a functional and aesthetic centerpiece in the living room. It defines the space while providing ample storage and display areas. The private areas of the penthouse, including the bedrooms and bathrooms, are defined by rich wood paneling. The use of wood adds warmth and contrast to the otherwise minimalist, light-filled interiors.
In the living room and dining areas, marble cladding constructions further enhance the luxurious feel of the space. The natural textures and colors of the marble complement the neutral tones used throughout the apartment. These provide subtle elegance and a timeless touch to the design.
Balancing luxury and functionality
The renovation approach goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to improve the everyday functionality of the space. In this penthouse renovation, the main goal was to create a living environment that is as practical and aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, a key theme throughout the renovation was the desire to create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. In addition to the expansive windows, sliding glass doors open onto a private terrace. These openings blur further the line between interior and exterior. The terrace, with its views of the sea and the Glyfada skyline, extends the living space.
This renovation project in Glyfada is an example of creating spaces that enhance both form and function. By focusing on the sea view, optimizing the layout, and using high-quality materials to define individual spaces, this penthouse is transformed into a modern loft. The result is a home that not only looks stunning but also offers an improved living experience, with every detail carefully considered to meet the needs of its residents.
