Residential building in Chalandri: a dialogue between form and void

Located in the vibrant suburb of Chalandri, this residential building reflects a contemporary architectural design rooted in spatial balance, material refinement, and contextual sensitivity. The project responds to its urban setting through a clear architectural language that mediates between the volume of the building and the voids it deliberately frames. The residential building is located near an urban stream that brings ecological and spatial value to the neighborhood as well.

More than a static composition, the structure unfolds as a spatial dialogue through its architectural design. Built forms and negative spaces coexist in a continuous interplay, generating moments of openness, transition, and retreat. The architectural gesture is intentional yet understated, establishing a sense of domesticity while redefining the urban apartment typology.

Site and strategy: integration through geometry

The architectural design of the building begins with an understanding of the site. Not merely as a plot, but as a spatial opportunity within the urban fabric of Chalandri. The building’ design follows a volumetric concept that manages mass through subtraction rather than addition. This strategic subtraction results in carefully orchestrated voids. Open terraces, internal courtyards, and circulation pockets that allow light, air, and nature to enter the living spaces, resembling to the nearby stream.

This approach dissolves the typical monolithic appearance of multi-residential buildings. Instead, the architectural mass is fragmented and reassembled, creating a cohesive yet dynamic presence that adapts to the local scale. The setbacks, angular volumes, and varied façade depths contribute to a formal balance that respects the neighborhood while asserting its own identity.

Materiality and Tactile Design

Material selection plays a critical role in reinforcing the building’s architectural design. A restrained palette of textures and finishes provides a quiet sophistication to the structure. These materials were chosen not only for their durability but also for their ability to age gracefully, contributing to the building’s long-term presence in the urban landscape.

Surface textures vary subtly to distinguish the private from the shared, the structural from the ornamental. Balconies, terraces, and recesses are framed with minimal yet expressive elements. These elements enhance the human scale and offering visual continuity. The tactility of the surfaces invites engagement, reinforcing the building’s intention to be vibrant.

Spatial Fluidity and Functional Clarity

Internally, the building offers residential layouts that prioritize functional clarity while allowing for spatial fluidity. Living areas are arranged to maximize visual connections to the outdoor spaces, while private zones maintain discretion through thoughtful partitioning. Circulation is intuitive and efficient, minimizing lost space and enhancing usability across all levels.

Each apartment is designed as a distinct living environment, with variations in layout and outdoor access providing a personalized experience for the occupants. This attention to differentiation avoids uniformity and supports a diverse community of residents within a cohesive architectural framework.

Architectural voids giving a rhythm to the facade

The voids within the project are not simply aesthetic interruptions in form. Along with the shutters, they give to the building’s facade a unique character. Moreover, the extensive balconies, these semi-private outdoor spaces function as shared extensions of the interior.

The architectural void thus becomes a tool for urban living: a space for breathing, gathering, and observing. This strategy aligns with broader sustainable goals while contributing to the building’s unique identity. Through their presence, the voids activate the architecture both environmentally and experientially.

The residential building in Chalandri does not seek to dominate its surroundings. Instead, it contributes to the local narrative through proportion, scale, and sensitivity to context. The building offers visual rhythm, nuanced materiality, and an architectural depth often missing in contemporary developments.

Architecture as Experience

This residential project in Chalandri represents more than a collection of units. It is a crafted response to its context, an exploration of space through form and void, and an architectural proposition that values both living and dwelling. Through its deliberate geometry, curated materials, and light-filled interiors, the building offers a new typology for residential life. A typology with deep roots in human experience, architectural integrity, and spatial intelligence.
