Designing a Private Residence for Family Living

This contemporary residence interior in Heraklion, Crete explores the relationship between light, materiality and everyday living. Designed for a family of four, the house brings together spaces for gathering, interaction and retreat. Shared family life coexists with privacy, creating an environment that supports different rhythms and moments throughout the day.

A Cohesive Architectural Language

The design does not seek visual spectacle or formal expression. Instead, it focuses on shaping an environment that unfolds through movement, light and material presence. A consistent architectural language connects every part of the residence and brings the individual spaces together into a unified whole.

Wood defines the character of the interior. It appears in the flooring, bespoke joinery and integrated architectural elements. Natural Travertine complements the warmth of the timber and highlights key moments within the spatial sequence. Together, these materials add depth, texture and subtle tonal variation. Rather than acting as decorative finishes, they shape the atmosphere and strengthen the experience of the space.

Materiality, Light and Atmosphere

White walls and ceilings create a calm backdrop for light and materiality. Their neutrality allows textures, shadows and reflections to become more visible. At the same time, the restrained architectural expression keeps the focus on proportion, continuity and spatial clarity. As a result, the residence feels cohesive and connected.

Natural light plays a central role throughout the project. Openings bring daylight deep into the interior, while reflections and material textures enrich the experience of the space. Wood, stone and ribbed glass interact with light in different ways. They filter, diffuse and reflect it, creating subtle changes in atmosphere throughout the day. Consequently, the perception of the interior continuously evolves as light conditions shift.
