Villas in Methoni

The villas are situated in Methoni, a picturesque seaside town in Peloponnese, famous for its historical castle and beautiful surroundings. The eight villas complex are located in a privileged plot, just a few meters away from the sea. The summer houses are arranged in two groups of four residencies, allowing each row of house units to enjoy the view towards the sea. Moreover, the small incline offers privacy to the gardens of the villas and unique views. The plot is located in a unique landscape, surrounded by lush vegetation, characteristic trees, and bushes of the Mediterranean flora. A core desire was to integrate the large residential complex into the environment. For this reason, the two clusters of houses develop along the two communal pool areas, around which gardens with plants and local herbs develop.

Architectural design

The architectural concept of the villas is inspired by the local architectural language. Many towers and small castles are scattered around the villages of the Peloponnese peninsula. Tall, rectangular volumes with small windows, ruins of another era, often built on cliffsides, are a central feature of the built landscape of the area. The project aims to reinterpret this local architecture style and propose a fresh creative approach adapted to the todays, contemporary needs.

The almost square volumes develop in two floors and end up in an inclined roof. The openings towards the entrance of the houses, are relatively small, resembling the local traditional architecture. Additionally, the material palette used, also draws inspiration from the local architecture and raw beauty of the area. Besides that, local materials such as natural wood, plastered surfaces and stone walls enhance this overall sense of contemporary country houses. Yet, they enhance the integration of the villas in the topography of the landscape.

Exterior spaces

Low stone constructions, stuck between the soft white tall towers, enhance this atmosphere of local architecture and the connection to the nature. All the holiday houses have access to outdoor living areas, with orientation towards the view to the sea. Pergolas on the side of the houses, provide shelter to the sun and offer a comfortable microclimate to the dwellers. Right in the middle of the plot, the common area of the swimming pool has natural materials. For example, the timber floor and wooden pergola. These elements together with the stonewall fence create a relaxing outdoor area, facing the sea. All these natural feel materials, create a coherent whole an overall calm atmosphere finely tuned with the unique environment.
